Getting to Guangzhou

Subway
The Guangzhou subway system is very good. It covers the entire central area of the city, and it is rapidly being expanded outwards. Passengers purchase tokens at the subway stations. These tokens are scanned upon boarding, and deposited upon exiting the subway car. All the subway stops are announced in both Chinese and English. The subways do tend to get packed during rush hours, so tourists that don’t like to get crammed in like sardine should avoid them.

Bus
This is the cheapest public transportation option in Guangzhou. These buses cover the entire city, but they are much slower than taking the subway. Passengers need to pay their fares with exact change, or they can use a prepaid car. The air-conditioned buses in Guangzhou always cost more than those without air-conditioning, but this is a small price to pay for those riding the bus during Guangzhou’s brutally hot summers.

In 2010, Guangzhou introduced a bus service called the Bus Rapid Transit. These buses run on special segregated bus lanes, making them much faster than the standard buses that have to deal with the horrible traffic in the city.

Taxicabs
This is the most popular way to get around for most tourists. The taxicabs in Guangzhou are very cheap, and it is almost never hard to find one at any time of the day or night. Always force the drivers to use the meter, otherwise they will try and overcharge unsuspecting tourists. They also may try to take the long way to run up the meter, so keep an eye on the way they are going. Most cab drivers do not speak English at all, so it is best for tourists to have a Chinese friend write the destination down on a slip of paper that can be handed to the driver.

Renting a Car
Driving in China is not for the faint of heart, but there are a couple of car rental companies in the city. For those that have their hearts set on renting a car in Guangzhou, be sure to get the maximum amount of insurance. Always drive very defensively, because many others on the road in China drive like maniacs.

Walking
This can be a great way to explore the individual districts of the city. The sights and sounds of the street are very interesting for those visiting Guangzhou, and walking it is a great method of discovering things off the tourist paths.
